Carol A. Chetkovich

Carol Chetkovich is Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Public Policy Program at Mills College. Assistant Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, where she is affiliated with the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy. She teaches courses on public management, diversity in the workplace, and research methods.

Chetkovich's research interests include public service education and the trend toward cross-sectoral careers; and organizational and social change, with attention to the influences of race, gender and occupational culture.  She is the author of Real Heat: Gender and Race in the Urban Fire Service (a winner of Choice's Outstanding Academic Book award), a study of workplace culture and diversity in the Oakland Fire Department, and coauthor with Frances Kunreuther of From the Ground Up: Grassroots Organizations Making Social Change, a study of grassroots social change organizations. Prior to coming to Mills, she taught strategic management, workplace diversity, and research methods at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Chetkovich has conducted policy research for state and federal government agencies in a number of social service areas, and she has also worked in women’s health care, serving for several years as the Vice President of a Bay Area family planning clinic.  She is a graduate of Stanford University and holds an M.P.P. and Ph.D. from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.
