R. Steven Daniels received a Bachelor of Science in political science from Southern Oregon College (now University) in 1968, a Master of Science in political science from University of Oregon in 1972, and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Oregon in 1981. He has worked at several universities including Canisius College, The University of California at Riverside, California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, The University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and Southern Illinois University. He ahs worked for the last 13 years at The University of Alabama at Birmingham where he is Associate Professor and MPA Program Director.

His current research focuses on disaster management and aging policy. With Carolyn L. Clark-Daniels, he is working on a manuscript on presidential decision making and emergency management. To that end he has conducted research at the Lyndon Baines Johnson, Gerald R. Ford, and Jimmy Carter Presidential Libraries and at the Nixon Materials Project at the National Archives. This research has been presented at several major conferences including the Midwest Political Association Annual Meeting, the American Political Science Association Annual Meeting, the Southeastern Conference on Public Administration, and the Carter Presidency Policy Choices in the Post New Deal Era (10th Anniversary Conference of the Carter Library). His aging policy publications have appeared in The Journal of Criminal Justice, The Southwest Journal of Aging, The Journal of Health and Human Services Administration, Social Science Quarterly, Policy Studies Review, The Annals of Emergency Medicine, The Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect, and The Gerontologist.
